We have a fish, a betta splendens, that was moved indoors yesterday due to the seasonable drop in temperature. Before finding for a new place to call home without distraction he was perched on the coffee table for the day. Directly in front of me. This fish doesn't miss a beat. If something moves, he's there. I spent most of yesterday afternoon locked in a mutual death stare with an unblinking piscine opponent called Bubbles. True. |

Haha. So cute. "Where are you going lil' fella?"
He scares me a little actually...
I used to have a beta in a full size tank with other fish. Every now and then he'd make the suicide leap out of tank to floor. So you'd find the dessicated fish on floor.
Throw apparently dead beta back in tank. Five minutes later he'd be fighting his reflection again.
They're tough as roaches and dumber than bricks.
That sounds like Bubbles.
I like his penchant for having the same colors as a fuchsia blossom: and how he hangs out to the side. Like he doesn't trust that wacom stylus of yours.
It's the perfect colouration for blending in with algae in the rice paddies.
Indeed. It's also handy for beating up your piscine spouse and bringing it on with other males!
He's watching your applause warily.
now that is an excellent fish
Agreed, despite the unfortunate name.
Came thru it swimmingly, 'twould appear. ;)
...and if you place a mirror in front of it, I swear it will attack it. I've had two of this little critters, and they're the most agressive fish I've ever seen other than the white shark I keep next to my bed. o_O
Haha! Yeah, two males together and you end up with something that looks like two drag queens tearing shreds off each other over a microphone.
... who spent the afternoon thinking 'why is this guy staring at me so much'?

At any point did you get the sense that he thought you had pretty (albeit HUGE) eyes?
I don't think it's possible to capture 'wary' as an expression on a fish any better than that. Kudos! Also, I think he looks a little like Admiral Akbar.
And a little disconcerting. | |
